Canada Invokes Emergency Powers Law

Canada Protest

Because of the continued protests, Canada’s Prime Minister has chosen to invoke the never-before-used 1988 Emergencies Act, the country’s most potent measure in the event of a national emergency.

The act allows his administration to freeze truckers’ personal and corporate bank accounts, suspend the insurance on their rigs and also tow away vehicles.

The protest began after a new law was enacted requiring all truckers to get vaccinated prior crossing the US-Canada border, or face quarantine upon return.

Reports said that one of the largest donations from a single person for the protest was from a New Brunswick business; it was confirmed that the President of the company donated $75,000.

Following the historic decision to invoke the never-before-used 1988 Emergencies Act, permitting the Canadian government to freeze bank accounts for truckers and supporters, several trucks were believed to have begun to turn back after more than two weeks of protest.
