Physicists working with Microsoft think the universe is a self-learning computer
A team of theoretical physicists working with Microsoft today published an amazing pre-print research paper describing the universe as a self-learning system of evolutionary laws. In other words: We live inside a computer that learns. The big idea: Bostrom’s Simulation Argument has been a hot topic in science circles lately. We published “What if you’re living in a simulation, but there’s no computer” recently to posit a different theory, but Microsoft’s pulled a cosmic “hold my beer” with this paper. Dubbed “The Autodidactic Universe,” and published to arXiv today, the paper spans 80 pages and lays out a pretty good… This story continues at The Next WebOr just read more coverage about: Microsoft

Adventures with AI: Can computer vision and GPT-3 get me fit?
Welcome to Adventures with AI, a column exploring what happens when artificial intelligence takes control of everyday tasks. I enjoy exercise, but I’ve always hated gyms. I loathe the pugnacious meatheads hogging the bench; the vacuous EDM pounding my brain into mush; the putrid blend of BO dripping off the walls; the eye-watering fees; the fear of being judged. They’re ghastly places frequented by some of the most unpleasant people on Earth. After years of enduring these assaults on my senses, I decided enough was enough. I cancelled my membership, built a home gym, and started playing five-a-side football with friends.… This story continues at The Next Web

What separates a good manager from a bad one? Bullshitting
You should be continually outsmarted by the people you manage. If you’re not, you’ve hired the wrong people — or you’re just a bad manager. The downside of hiring people more brilliant than you is they’ll be challenging to manage or argue with. The people you hire are the experts — not you — so what’s the point of having them around if you’re not going to listen? But you still have a role as a manager and, very often, it is about more than just the facts of the case. So how do I deal with this? Bullshitting. I… This story continues at The Next Web

G Cloud is unlimited cloud space to backup all your mobile devices, all for just $39.99
TLDR: With a G Cloud Mobile Backup Unlimited Storage Plan subscription, you can backup everything from all your mobile devices to the cloud at almost half off the regular price. Nomophobia. It’s out there. It’s very real. And statistically speaking, there’s a good chance you have it. Nomophobia is a creeping sense of dread or fear when you don’t have access to a working phone. And while that might sound odd, about 2 out of 3 people exhibit some version of nomophobia, almost 66 percent of the population. Frankly, it’s not really all that crazy if you consider what a… This story continues at The Next Web

Watch humans drive slowly in Elon Musk’s ‘revolutionary’ $52M tunnel
I’m going to tell you this entire story in one sentence, because that’s all it deserves. Earlier this week, local reporters in California got another look at Elon Musk’s 1.5 mile long, $52 million, Las Vegas “Loop” that was supposed to be a total transport revolution, and it turns out that it’s still nothing more than a really expensive hole through the terra firma in which humans drive cars quite slowly. I have nothing more to say about that. At least The Boring Company is living up to its name. Footage of what it looks like when a @Tesla is… This story continues at The Next Web

This is why China and Russia want to build a base on the Moon
The Russian space agency Roscosmos and China’s National Space Administration (CNSA) recently agreed to establish lunar outposts on, and in orbit around, the Moon. This announcement comes as Russia prepares to mark the 60th anniversary of Yuri’s Night — the beginning of human spaceflight. Roscosmos originated in 1991 from the dissolved soviet space program. The Soviet space agency accomplished a number of firsts, including launching the first satellite, as well as the first man, and woman, into space. In 1971, the USSR launched Salyut 1, the first space station, into orbit around Earth. The Soviet Union also played critical roles… This story continues at The Next Web

Watch a cyborg monkey play Pong with its mind, thanks to Elon Musk’s Neuralink
Elon Musk hopes to put computer chips in our brains that will enable “human-AI symbiosis.” But for now, he’s focused on making monkeys play video games. Musk’s Neuralink startup posted a video today of a primate playing Pong with its mind. The nine-year-old macaque, called Pager, has a Neuralink implanted in his brain. Pager was first trained to play Pong with a joystick in return for a banana smoothie reward. As he played, his neural activity was captured by a 1,024 electrode device, called the N1 Link. This data was transmitted to a decoder that mapped Pager’s neural patterns to his joystick movements.… This story continues at The Next Web

Here’s why you should quit
Quitters never prosper. Never give up. If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again. There are so many sayings with the same basic message: quitting is bad. This idea is instilled in kids, internalized by adults, and generally just considered common sense. It’s also often wrong. I once had a job that, in retrospect, I should have quit earlier. I stuck around two years longer than made sense, all because I thought giving up would be a personal failure on my part. That was wrong. When I finally left, I was happier, more productive, and better off. I quit,… This story continues at The Next Web
