Microsoft Notepad Finally Gets Spell Check

Microsoft Notepad Finally Gets Spell Check

After decades as a no-frills text editor, Microsoft Notepad is finally getting a much-needed upgrade: spell-check. Microsoft is rolling out an update to Windows 11 beta testers that allows Notepad to highlight misspellings as you type. The update also includes autocorrect to fix common typos.

The reason for the long wait is unclear, but it may be due to Microsoft’s focus on pushing its Office software suite.  This new spell checker will offer suggestions and allow users to adjust which words and file types are flagged.

The feature is being rolled out to Windows Insiders on the Canary and Dev channels, and will automatically activate for certain file types while remaining off for coding-related files. Users can adjust these settings as needed.

Microsoft hasn’t announced a release date for the stable version of Windows 11, but the beta rollout hints at an upcoming wider release.
