Elon Musk's X Set to Launch X TV App, Aiming to Transform Smart TV Viewing

Elon Musk’s company X is set to launch a video-viewing app for smart TVs, named X TV, as announced by CEO Linda Yaccarino. The upcoming app aims to transform smart TVs into hubs for engaging and real-time content, utilizing features like video search, a dedicated video feed, and AI-curated content. Additionally, it will synchronize with users’ activities on their smartphones, allowing seamless continuation of video watching on a larger screen.

The announcement comes a month after leaks from app researcher Nima Owji, hinting at the app’s capabilities. X TV was also previewed in a clip showing a controversial interview by Tucker Carlson with Vladimir Putin and a SpaceX rocket launch, signaling a broad content strategy that might position X as a competitor to YouTube.

This move is part of Musk’s broader strategy to pivot the historically text-centric platform towards more video-centric content, especially after his acquisition of Twitter. X TV will allow both free and premium users to upload videos, with premium users enjoying the capability to upload longer, higher-resolution videos.

Despite these advancements, there are concerns about whether X’s infrastructure can handle the projected surge in video content, particularly since the platform currently advises against uploading in full 1080p due to bandwidth considerations. This could pose a limitation for viewing on modern smart TVs, which often support higher resolutions like 4K.
