Hackers Exploit AI Hype with Fake Facebook Pages to Spread Malware

Hackers Exploit AI Hype with Fake Facebook Pages to Spread Malware (1)

Cybercriminals are hijacking Facebook pages and using ads to impersonate popular AI tools like Midjourney, SORA, ChatGPT-5, and DALL-E. Their goal is to trick unsuspecting users into downloading malware that steals passwords and other sensitive data.

These fake pages promote nonexistent features or desktop versions of popular AI tools to lure victims. In one notable case, a fraudulent Midjourney page amassed over 1.2 million followers before Facebook removed it.  The attackers quickly launched a new page that remains active.

The malware distributed often disguises itself as browser extensions, such as a fake Google Translate tool, to steal Facebook cookies, cryptocurrency wallet information, and more. This stolen data can be sold on the dark web or used for further fraud.

The success of these campaigns shows how hackers exploit the excitement around AI. It’s essential to be vigilant when seeing online ads, especially those promising exclusive AI features. Always verify offers on official websites and avoid downloading software from unverified sources.
