Microsoft Tests Ads Within the Windows 11 Start Menu

Microsoft is currently experimenting with displaying advertisements directly within the Windows 11 Start menu. These ads are appearing in the “Recommended” section, a place usually filled with suggestions for recently opened files.  The test seems limited to a small group of Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel within the US, and only consumer devices are affected.

How to Opt-Out of Start Menu Ads

If these ads aren’t for you, there’s a simple way to disable them:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Personalization
  3. Choose Start
  4. Toggle off Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more

Microsoft’s Advertising Push

This test expands Microsoft’s recent trend of increased advertising within Windows.  Previously, ads have shown up in File Explorer, and Windows 10 users have seen pop-ups promoting Windows 11.
