Twitter/X has long allowed adult content, but it is now formalizing its approach with a new adult content policy. This move aims to provide more clarity regarding the platform’s stance on explicit material. Previously, Twitter classified adult content under its “sensitive media” policy, requiring such content to be marked as “sensitive” to allow users to filter it out.
Under Elon Musk’s ownership, Twitter/X continues this policy but now explicitly endorses adult content as a valid form of expression. The new guidelines state, “We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality.” This includes AI-generated, photographic, or animated content like cartoons, hentai, or anime.
While adult content will be allowed, users who choose to hide sensitive material will still have the option to do so in their settings. Adult content is prohibited in profile or banner images, and non-consensual porn remains banned.
This policy change poses a challenge for Twitter, as it may further alienate mainstream advertisers who are already wary due to previous controversial changes. However, Twitter could explore monetizing adult content, having previously considered launching an OnlyFans competitor before halting due to concerns about child sexual abuse material.
