Starlink, the satellite internet service owned by SpaceX, experienced a brief but significant outage on Tuesday night. According to a post from Starlink and reports from users on DownDetector, the disruption affected thousands.
“Starlink is currently in a network outage and we are actively implementing a solution. We appreciate your patience and will share an update once this issue is resolved,” Starlink posted around 10 p.m. ET Tuesday. However, the cause of the outage was not disclosed.
About 30 minutes later, Starlink announced that the issue had been resolved. Despite this, some users reported continued disruptions, with services resuming fully for many by around 2 a.m. ET Wednesday. Data from DownDetector indicated over 41,000 outage reports, with 42% experiencing a “total blackout.” Some users found that restarting their Starlink hardware restored their connection.
Starlink provides internet access in numerous countries, including the US, Canada, most of Central and South America, Europe, and much of Oceania. Recently, service expanded to Indonesia and Fiji.
In the US, a Starlink home internet subscription costs $120 per month, while a plan for roaming vehicles like RVs is priced at $150 per month. Starlink also offers plans for boats, with fees ranging from $250 to $5,000 per month based on data usage.
Earlier this month, Starlink reported that its satellites had successfully weathered a recent geomagnetic storm, remaining “healthy” after the event, which caused auroras to be visible globally.
