SpaceX is reporting positive results in testing its “Direct to Cell” Starlink technology. This system uses satellites to deliver internet connectivity directly to mobile phones. In a letter to the FCC, SpaceX emphasizes the service’s success in meeting testing objectives.
The company has tested the service with various unmodified Samsung Galaxy, Apple iPhone, and Google Pixel devices. Successful connections occurred in varied environments, including urban/rural areas and even indoors. This promising feat was accomplished within the FCC’s authorized power flux density limits.
SpaceX also notes that the cellular Starlink technology was able to transmit SMS messages and even WhatsApp messages. Importantly, the company hasn’t received interference complaints during testing.
Pending FCC approval, SpaceX aims to launch the cellular Starlink system for T-Mobile customers this year. Initial service will focus on satellite-based SMS, with voice calls and data support planned for next year. SpaceX plans to launch over 800 Direct-to-Cell satellites to power this exciting new connectivity option.
