Apple Says Some iPhones Recorded Interactions with Siri Even if Users Opted Out

Apple iOS 15 bug

Apple has released iOS 15.4 beta 2 to address an issue that may have resulted in recording of conversations with Siri on certain devices, even if the user had previously opted out.

This bug appeared following the introduction of iOS 15, which enabled the improved Siri and Dictation option, which grants Apple access to record, store, and review your Siri interactions.

According to reports, Apple deleted all records related to the aforementioned Bug. Apple disabled the function for many customers with the iOS 15.2 update, but they said that a complete fix for the bug would be available in the next iOS 15.4 beta release. This might be why, after upgrading to 15.4 beta, you will be prompted to deny or grant permission to activate the aforementioned functionality.

The company said “This bug inadvertently enabled the setting for a small portion of devices. Since identifying the bug, we stopped reviewing and are deleting audio received from all affected devices.”

For problems like these, Apple should openly warn all of its consumers and urge them to keep their iPhones up to date, as well as alert individuals who are impacted. However, this was not the case; Apple has not acknowledged whether or not they notified impacted consumers.

Considering that Apple estimates that there will be over one billion active iPhones in 2020, a “small portion” of these devices might still amount to a relatively significant number.

If you have an iPhone and use Siri often, whether for business or for fun, we strongly advise you to update to iOS 15.2 or later.
