OpenAI’s official X (formerly Twitter) “Newsroom” account was hacked to promote a fake cryptocurrency scam.
The compromised account posted about a token called “$OPEANAI,” encouraging users to claim it by clicking a malicious link. The phishing link, once clicked, would lead users to a site designed to steal their cryptocurrency wallets.
The scam raised immediate red flags with a major typo (“OpeanAI”) and a URL that was not linked to OpenAI’s legitimate domain. Clicking the link could result in having your crypto assets drained.
This kind of scam has become common on X, where hackers take over verified accounts to spread fraudulent crypto posts. OpenAI has experienced similar attacks before, including the hacking of CTO Mira Murati’s account last year.
Although OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman is involved in the crypto space through his Worldcoin project, this hack is unrelated to his legitimate ventures.
