OpenAI Begins Training New Cutting-Edge AI Model

OpenAI has embarked on training a new, advanced AI model poised to succeed its current flagship, GPT-4. The company describes this new endeavor as a significant step towards achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI).

“OpenAI has recently begun training its next frontier model and we anticipate the resulting systems to bring us to the next level of capabilities on our path to AGI,” the company announced. However, details about the new AI, including its name and whether it will be called GPT-5, remain undisclosed.

The announcement also highlighted the formation of a new “Safety and Security Committee” to oversee future AI projects. This move follows the resignation of key members from OpenAI’s Superalignment team, including Jan Leike, who cited concerns over AI safety. In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted the need for improvement in this area and emphasized the company’s commitment to addressing these issues.

The Safety and Security Committee will be led by Altman, OpenAI Board Chairman Bret Taylor, and Nicole Seligman, general counsel for Sony. It will also include at least five technical and policy experts, with input from external advisors such as former NSA Cybersecurity Director Rob Joyce and former US Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Carlin.

“While we are proud to build and release models that are industry-leading in both capabilities and safety, we welcome a robust debate at this important moment,” OpenAI stated. However, the initial discussions and evaluations will be conducted privately. The committee’s first task is to review and enhance OpenAI’s processes and safeguards within 90 days, with public updates on their recommendations to follow.

The timeline suggests that OpenAI’s next-generation model could be unveiled in the fall.
