ChatGPT encountered its second major outage in June this afternoon, leaving users frustrated and unable to access the popular AI chatbot.
OpenAI acknowledged the problem, stating at 11:39 AM Pacific Time, “We are currently investigating elevated error rates impacting ChatGPT.” The cause of the outage remains unclear at this time.
Reports of the outage quickly spread, with users around the world experiencing disruptions. One Reddit user quipped, “Should I submit PTO? I hate working without ChatGPT.” Another user speculated, “Please let this be the voice update,” referring to the anticipated Voice Mode feature for the GPT-4o model.
However, the outage did not affect all ChatGPT users, and the number of reported issues was on the decline by the time of writing, according to Downdetector.com.
The most recent outage follows a similar incident on June 4, when ChatGPT went down and was restored only to fail again a few hours later. In May, the chatbot experienced intermittent outages and service delays over a four-day period.
Despite these issues, OpenAI reports that ChatGPT has maintained a 99.42% uptime over the past 90 days, the lowest among the four services tracked on status.openai.com. This has raised concerns among users who rely on the chatbot for their daily tasks. One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, “99.4% really isn’t very good for what’s become a business-critical tool for so many.”
Update: OpenAI has resolved the issue, updating status.openai.com to reflect “All Systems Operational.” The outage lasted approximately five hours, according to Downdetector.com.
