Mastodon Servers Targeted in Spam Attack

Mastodon, a decentralized social media platform, faced a recent spam attack that exploited smaller servers with open registration. The attack reportedly began as a personal dispute on Discord and escalated when the perpetrator realized they could automate spam account creation.

The spam consisted of troll posts and Discord server invites designed to disrupt the platform. Mastodon founder Eugen Rochko alerted the community and urged server admins to take protective measures such as enabling approval modes or blocking disposable email services.

This incident highlights a potential vulnerability in decentralized platforms.  Abandoned servers with open registration can be exploited by malicious actors.  Mastodon is working to address these concerns and provide guidance for server owners to improve security.
