The US government has officially banned the sale, resale, and licensing of Kaspersky security products due to concerns over national security and potential Russian government influence. This unprecedented move, announced by the White House, follows a lengthy investigation by the Commerce Department, which determined that Kaspersky’s operations pose a risk that cannot be mitigated except through a total prohibition.
Existing users of Kaspersky software in the US will not face legal penalties but are warned that they assume all cybersecurity risks by continuing its use. The ban prevents Kaspersky from entering new agreements with US entities and will restrict the company from providing updates starting September 29.
Kaspersky has contested the decision, arguing that it is politically motivated and undermines global cybersecurity efforts. The company maintains that it does not pose a threat to US national security and emphasizes its contributions to combating cyber threats globally.
