Apple is reportedly developing a new version of its AirTag, which has remained largely unchanged since its launch three years ago. According to Bloomberg, the updated tracker, codenamed B589, is currently in testing with manufacturing partners in Asia and is expected to launch in mid-2025.
While details about the new AirTag are limited, Bloomberg reports that it will feature a better chip, promising improved location tracking capabilities. This enhancement is likely to appeal to the many users who have relied on AirTags for locating everything from lost luggage to stolen cars. For instance, in late 2023, Washington D.C. distributed AirTags to residents in certain neighborhoods to assist police in tracking down stolen vehicles.
Despite their popularity, AirTags have faced significant controversy. There have been numerous reports of people using the devices to stalk others, exploiting their small size and effective tracking abilities. Initially, there was no mechanism to alert Android users if an AirTag had been placed on them or their belongings without consent. Apple later released updates to provide these alerts for Android users, but the company still faces a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit claims that AirTags have become a favored tool for stalkers, highlighting ongoing concerns about privacy and misuse.
As Apple works on this new version, it remains to be seen how they will address these serious issues. The tech community and consumers alike will be watching closely to see what improvements and safeguards are included in the next iteration of the AirTag.
