A California woman, frustrated by repeated package thefts, devised a clever solution using an Apple AirTag. After placing the device in a package and mailing it to herself, she tracked its location after it was stolen again. The woman reported the AirTag’s location to the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office on August 19.
Police followed the signal and discovered the stolen package, along with parcels from over a dozen other victims. They arrested a 27-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man for various crimes, including identity theft and credit card fraud.
The sheriff’s office praised the woman’s proactive approach and advised others to involve law enforcement for a safe resolution.
Apple’s AirTags have been used for both positive and negative purposes, from locating lost items to stalking. The company has implemented updates to address misuse and plans to release a new version with enhanced tracking features in 2025.
