Tom Hanks has issued a warning about AI-powered scams fraudulently using his likeness to promote fake cures for diabetes.
In a recent Instagram post, the actor clarified that he has no association with these ads, which employ deepfake technology to manipulate his face and voice.
One scam even repurposed footage from his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to falsely claim that a “17-second grape trick” can reverse type 2 diabetes.
Hanks, who has type 2 diabetes, emphasized that he only consults with his board-certified doctor for treatment and urged the public not to fall for these scams. He also reminded followers not to waste their money on these fraudulent products.
This incident is part of a broader trend where scammers are increasingly targeting celebrities like Elon Musk and Taylor Swift using AI. The FTC is considering measures to combat such impersonation frauds.
