OpenAI's GPT-4o Boosts ChatGPT Traffic

OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-4o, has caused a significant spike in web traffic to ChatGPT. Since its introduction last week, visits to ChatGPT.com have surged past 100 million per day, as reported by Similarweb.

On May 13, traffic to ChatGPT hit 96.3 million visits and surpassed 100 million in the following days. Previously, ChatGPT’s monthly high was 1.8 billion visits in May 2023. If current trends continue, ChatGPT is on track to reach 2.3 billion visits this month.

“In the seven days leading up to May 17, web traffic for chatgpt.com was up 27.7% compared to the previous week, and traffic to the openai.com corporate domain increased by 25%,” Similarweb noted. “During the same period, the daily active user count for the ChatGPT mobile app rose by 11.5% among combined iOS and Android users in the US.”

While interest in ChatGPT appeared to peak a year ago and declined during the summer of 2023, likely due to school holidays, the new traffic estimates indicate continued growth potential despite competition from other chatbots like Google’s Gemini.

The surge in traffic follows OpenAI’s decision to migrate the chatbot’s domain from chat.openai.com to chatgpt.com, simplifying discovery. Additionally, users no longer need to sign in with an OpenAI account to access the chatbot.

Despite the rising user traffic, many Americans remain unaware of ChatGPT. A Pew Research survey in March found that only 23% of US adults had ever used ChatGPT, highlighting significant growth opportunities ahead.
