Twitter created a Tor onion service domain on Tuesday to circumvent Russia’s efforts to restrict social media.
The TOR link is: https://twitter3e4tixl4xyajtrzo62zg5vztmjuricljdp2c5kshju4avyoid.onion.
To get access to the URL, the user must first download the Tor Browser – a well-known tool for anonymizing online traffic and bypassing government bans on websites and services.
After installing the Tor browser, users can copy and paste the URL into the Tor Browser to access the social networking site.
Twitter has not responded to requests for comment on the Tor website. However, a Twitter spokesperson directed us to a help page, indicating that the Tor browser is now officially supported.
The Tor site was established following the Russian government’s decision to restrict access to Twitter and other US social media sites, preventing residents from reading about the Ukrainian conflict from news sources other than Russian state news.
Russia attempted to ban the TOR browser website in December. The developers behind Tor, were able to quickly respond by creating mirror links to download Tor.
To get around these restrictions, local Russians have been using VPN services. These have been gaining popularity in the country in recent weeks for obvious reasons. Unseen Online Unlimited VPN is a free VPN service that allows access to blocked websites.
