Russia’s authorities, headed by President Putin, created a new system to prohibit toxic Internet content. The new rules are intended to prevent minors from launching street demonstrations and other potentially harmful activities.
The president supported a proposal by a member of the administration’s human rights committee to create a new method to ban toxic content.
According to reports, the new method would be reviewed by the government on June 1, 2022. President Putin discussed their efforts to clamp down on online content that is inappropriate for Russian citizens.
Over the years, Russia has increased its pressure on Western technology businesses, imposing hefty penalties. Google is one of the companies that has been penalized over $100 million for failing to delete banned content.
This raises greater concerns among foreign organizations that this might pave the way for a more restricted and filtered internet in Russia.
