Sudanese Brothers Charged in 35,000 Global DDoS Attacks

Two Sudanese brothers, Ahmed Salah Yousif Omer (22) and Alaa Salah Yusuuf Omer (27), have been charged in the US for launching over 35,000 DDoS attacks. Operating under the group Anonymous Sudan, the duo allegedly disrupted services like Microsoft, PayPal, and Riot Games.

The brothers reportedly created and leased a DDoS attack tool, named “Godzilla Botnet” and “Skynet Botnet,” to over 100 hackers. Anonymous Sudan demanded ransom payments via Telegram, even targeting critical systems like hospitals and government agencies.

Investigators linked Ahmed Salah’s internet activity to Anonymous Sudan through cloud servers and PayPal accounts, eventually leading to their arrest in March 2023. The attacks caused over $10 million in damages and led to a temporary shutdown of vital services, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Ahmed faces life imprisonment, while his older brother could receive up to five years if convicted. The investigation involved undercover FBI agents and seized their DDoS tools.
