A San Francisco woman, Amina V., shared a concerning incident involving a Waymo driverless taxi, where two men blocked the vehicle to catcall her. The men refused to move despite a green light, asking for her phone number. Amina recorded the encounter and posted it on Twitter/X, warning others of the potential risks of riding alone in autonomous vehicles.
The incident occurred when the Waymo car stopped at a red light, and one of the men stood in front, preventing it from moving. Waymo’s customer support reached out to Amina after she pressed an in-car button, offering assistance and asking if police intervention was necessary.
While Amina praised the company’s quick response, she raised concerns about how self-driving cars handle human interference. She suggested Waymo should implement safety measures to address such harassment.
Waymo has responded publicly, expressing regret over the incident and reaffirming their commitment to rider safety. Amina, who has used Waymo multiple times before, said she will be cautious about riding alone in the future.
