Windows 11 has officially overtaken Windows 10 as the most popular operating system for PC gamers, according to Valve’s August Steam hardware survey. The survey revealed that 49.17% of Steam users now run Windows 11, marking a 3-point increase from the previous month.
Meanwhile, Windows 10 saw a decline, dropping 3 points to 47.09%, marking the first time Windows 11 has taken the lead.
The shift is notable, given that Windows 10 had a significant lead earlier in the year, with a 12-point advantage in March. However, Microsoft’s looming 2025 deadline to end support for Windows 10 has led many users to switch.
Recent performance updates for AMD Ryzen 9000 and 7000 chips on Windows 11 may have further driven the shift.
Despite these gains, the survey is based on random samples of Steam users, so future results may vary.
