ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot, often needs repeated reminders to stay on track during extensive conversations. That could soon change. OpenAI is testing a “memory” feature allowing ChatGPT to recall important details from previous discussions. This means if you told it your child loves jellyfish, it might later suggest a jellyfish-themed birthday card idea.
This memory capability holds enormous potential. ChatGPT could better assist with complex tasks like recipe generation or writing assistance, seamlessly factoring in dietary restrictions or stylistic preferences. Enhanced memory opens doors for storytelling bots as well, preventing inconsistencies in generated narratives.
For control, users will have personalization settings to dictate what ChatGPT remembers and forgets. They can even temporarily disable memory for sensitive conversations. This feature also extends to other “GPTs” (text-generating AIs.)
OpenAI is currently testing this with a subset of users. A broader rollout is expected soon, though any feature is subject to change during this trial phase. With increased memory capacity, ChatGPT’s potential to streamline tasks and become a more integrated assistant expands significantly.
