Samsung banned ChatGPT and other generative AI tools on company devices due to their misuse by at least three employees for troubleshooting proprietary code and summarizing internal meeting notes.
As per a memo circulated on Monday, Samsung has informed its employees of its temporary limitations on the use of generative AI tools, which may encompass not just ChatGPT but also other rival chatbots such as Google Bard and Microsoft Bing AI, according to Bloomberg’s report.
“Interest in generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT has been growing internally and externally,” Samsung says. “While this interest focuses on the usefulness and efficiency of these platforms, there are also growing concerns about security risks presented by generative AI.”
According to the memo, Samsung’s management team is apprehensive that ChatGPT might retain sensitive internal information without allowing users to delete it before generating responses to global users. Employees who continue to use ChatGPT will face “disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment,” Samsung says.
According to The US Sun, other major corporations including Walmart, Verizon, and JP Morgan have taken steps to prohibit or limit the use of ChatGPT. Walmart’s software engineering division circulated internal usage guidelines and a warning about ChatGPT in March, while The Wall Street Journal reported that Verizon and JP Morgan have implemented similar measures.
