Meta plans on creating a standalone text-based content-sharing platform that will support ActivityPub, the platform used by Mastodon.
As per Moneycontrol, Meta is developing a new platform called P92, which is a separate app for text-based link sharing. It is thought to bear the Instagram brand and support the open, decentralized social networking technology ActivityPub. Since the new app will support the current Instagram login, P92 might have billions of users upon launch.
Meta confirms that they are actually working on a decentralized social network stating: “We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests,”
Tappable links, user profiles, verification badges, the ability to share photos and videos, and, of course, the ability to follow other users and like what they post are all expected features. Does this sound familiar? A Twitter competitor is more plausible.
It is unclear whether P92 is still in the concept stage or has begun development.
