New York Schools Ban Access to ChatGPT to Fight Cheating and Misinformation

The New York City Department of Education has blocked access to ChatGPT on its network Computers and other school devices due to concerns that AI technologies may disrupt students’ education.

Jenna Lyle, a department representative, stated that allowing students to use ChatGPT may have “negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content.”

Lyle added that “While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and lifelong success,”

ChatGPT became popular because of how it responds to inquiries; it allows users to easily ask follow-up questions on their first inquiry in a very quick manner.

Others argue that the educational system will need to adapt to this type of technology just like how it adapted Google Search and Wikipedia when it was first introduced before.

What are your thoughts? Is it a smart idea to ban ChatGPT, or are schools simply concerned about how it will make student life easier to answer questions?
