The current tensions at Twitter following Elon Musk’s acquisition seems to have aided competitor social media network Mastodon, which has already reached one million active users for the first time.
Mastodon, a Twitter competitor, is rapidly getting popular following Musk’s takeover. Mastodon is a free and open-source platform that allows users to build self-hosted social networking sites.
Mastodon Founder Eugen Rochko said on Monday that:
“Hey, so, we’ve hit 1,028,362 monthly active users across the network today,”
The surge in active users on the platform was driven by Twitter’s massive layoffs. It has grown significantly from 608,837 active users on Wednesday to 1 million active users today.
They also revealed that since last Wednesday, the Mastodon ecosystem has more than quadrupled the number of independent servers on the network from 437 to 1,124.
The 1 million active users are relatively few in comparison to Twitter, which had 237.8 million monetizable daily active users in July. However, increased interest as a result of Twitter’s tension and changes may help Mastodon become a major rival in the near future.
