Spotify has officially announced the acquisition of Heardle, a music trivia game that uses relaxing music and beautiful visuals to help reduce stress and anxiety. Spotify has purchased and integrated a game into its streaming services for the first time. Spotify intends to serve two functions: first, to keep music nerds engaged; and second, as a music discovery tool.
Global head of Music at Spotify Jeremy Erlich stated that:
“We are always looking for innovative and playful ways to enhance music discovery and help artists reach new fans,” and added: “Heardle has proven to be a really fun way to connect millions of fans with songs they know and love and with new songs and a way to compete with their friends as to who has the best musical knowledge.”
For the time being, the game requires access to its original website. The game will still be played like how it was played before. However, this time, when the answer is revealed at the end, it will link to the song on Spotify (previously Soundcloud)
The purchase price was not disclosed by the company. Spotify integration will begin in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand before expanding to additional nations.
Spotify has also stated that Heardle would be integrated “more fully” into the app. However, no date is given as to when it will be available.
