Google's 'Speaking Practice' AI Tool Enhances English Conversational Skills

Google is currently piloting a new feature called “Speaking Practice” through its Search Labs initiative, aimed at enhancing users’ English conversational skills. This innovative tool is available exclusively in Argentina, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and Venezuela for members of Google’s Search Labs, which grants early access to potential new additions to Google Search.

The main objective of “Speaking Practice” is to aid users in improving their conversational English by engaging them in exercises powered by artificial intelligence. These exercises involve responding to open-ended questions like, “What should I do to get into shape?” which are intended to simulate natural conversation more effectively than traditional language learning apps that might focus on structured responses.

By practicing with these AI-driven prompts, users can incorporate new vocabulary and phrases into their everyday conversations, preparing them better for real-world interactions rather than just automated responses.

This new tool builds on Google’s recent enhancements to language-focused features in Search, such as last year’s update which offered feedback on clarity and grammar for spoken queries. While both services enhance language proficiency, “Speaking Practice” is distinct in its focus on interactive, conversational practice rather than just providing feedback on single queries.

As of now, “Speaking Practice” remains in the testing phase, and Google has not provided a timeline for its wider release or expansion to other markets.
